Information on Mount Kenya

It is a UNESCO world listed site. In comparison, what Mt. Kilimanjaro offers in altitude, Mt. Kenya surpasses in beauty.

It is the second highest mountain in Africa, standing @ 5199 m above sea level at point Batian. It is an ancient dormant volcano and last erupted some 3.5 million years ago.

It is one of the most scenic volcanic mountains in the world. It can be described as roughly circular, about 60 kms. across at 200mm contour. Its main peaks rise sharply from around 4,500 m.

It has rare afro alpine moorland. Lower slopes host dense tropical rainforest and a bamboo forest.

The wildlife at Mount Kenya National Park include: elephant, tree hyrax, white tailed mongoose, suni, fronted duiker, mole rat, bush buck, water buck, buffaloes, eland, lion, leopard, bushbuck, giant forest hog, the endangered bongo and rhino & over one hundred and thirty species of birds.

Activities here include Game viewing, camping, Mountain climbing, plant naming, bird watching, hiking and cave exploration.

What to bring: Binoculars, camera, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, guidebooks, trekking poles, sleeping bags, umbrella, sandals, socks, gaiters.

Trekking tip: Ensure you regulate your pace, take it easy and always keep hydrated.

Other attractions: Volcanic cliffs, gorges, tarns, picturesque valleys, out cropped ridges and cols formed by cooling lava and subsequent glacial erosion.

Day 1: Nairobi- Sirimon-Old Moses

Morning pick up from Nairobi City or the Airport for the drive to the Mount Kenya National Park. We should be at the Sirimon Park Gate by 11 am.

Commence the trek, which takes you 3 to 4 hours and cover some 9 kms. This route is drier, scenic and good for beginners. As you trek today you are also taking an acclimatization hike via tropical rain forest. Overnight at the Old Moses Camp. (3,200 m). Full board

Day 2: Old Moses- Shipton’s

With your packed lunches hike past steep slopes towards the Shipton’s Camp. You will pass through Likii and Mackinder’s Valley. You will view giant groundsels along this route and breathtaking scenery.g

The hike this day takes between 6 to 8 hours and it is 17 km. Check in at Shipton’s Camp. From here you can easily view the 3 highest peaks of Batian, Nelion & Lenana.

Temperatures here can reach minus 10 degrees celsius. Overnight at the Shipton’s Camp (4,200 metres). Full board

Day 3: Shipton’s

Spend this day for acclimatization. You can take some trekking. Overnight at Shipton’s Camp. Full board

Day 4: Shipton’s- Point Lenana-Met Station

At 2 Am; wake up and take tea and some biscuits. Start the attempt on Point Lenana (4985 m); which is the highlight of our trip. Take African sunrise photos.

Descend slowly to the Mackinder’s Camp (4,300 m) for breakfast. Have some rest and then continue to the Met Station (3050 m) arriving for dinner and overnight. Full board

Day 5: Met Station- Naromoru Gate-Nairobi

Breakfast. Depart. Walk through the Bamboo Forest and onto the Park’s Naromoru Gate. Here, you link up with your transport for Nairobi and are dropped off at the Airport or Nairobi Hotel. Breakfast

5 Days Mt Kenya Climbing – Sirimon – Naro Moru Route 2024/2025

Sirimon route is considered by many to represent Mt Kenya one of the easiest routes to reach Point Lenana.

This is the most popular of all the routes that lead up to the Mountain. It is the steepest and the fastest way up Mt Kenya and ascends the mountain from the west. The route is not particularly scenic but has some of the best tourist accommodations.

The Sirimon Route is an accessible and enjoyable hiking route on Mount Kenya and well within the capabilities of fit hill walkers, offering a varied trek from the cultivated lowlands, through unique glacier-sculpted alpine heath and up to jagged volcanic peaks and glistening glaciers near the peak of Point Lenana.
